Your ceremony location sets the tone for the whole day. It impacts the vibe, the timeline, guest comfort, sound, photos, and what you’re allowed to do.
The quick shortcut: pick the type first
- Venue ceremony
Best for: comfort, bathrooms, power, easy setup, solid rain plan
Watch-outs: venue rules, strict timing, styling restrictions - Outdoor public space (park, foreshore, beach)
Best for: views, relaxed feel, simple vibe
Watch-outs: permits, public access (people can walk through), time limits, weather, wind/noise - Religious/heritage space
Best for: meaning, tradition, atmosphere
Watch-outs: strict rules, fixed ceremony windows, music/photo limits
If you’re choosing a beach or park in Australia, know this Many beaches and council parks are public land. You may need a permit/booking and you usually won’t get exclusive use (the public can still be there).
Also expect possible limits on:
- Ceremony duration (including set-up/pack-down)
- Guest numbers
- Confetti/balloons/rice and other “leave a trace” items
- Alcohol
- What can be staked/pegged into the ground
- National park rules if it’s not council land
Wedlii tip: Want the beach look without the beach chaos? Do the ceremony somewhere protected, then do beach photos after.
The 5 checks that stop wedding-day stress
- Does it feel like you?
Classic, modern, spiritual, relaxed, formal, intimate. If it doesn’t feel like you, it will feel weird on the day. - Can your guests actually enjoy it?
Check: seating space, shade, toilets, parking, easy access for prams/heels/older guests. Will they be in the full sun and heat? - Does it work with your timeline?
Check: arrival time, ceremony start, how long you have, pack-down time, travel time to reception. - Are the rules compatible with your vision?
Ask about: music/speakers, candles, confetti/petals, signage, photography limits, set-up restrictions. - How will it be photographed at your ceremony time?
Visit at the same time of day. Look at sun direction, harsh light, dappled shade, and whether there’s enough space to move. You want to be in the shade or the sun above or behind you. Be careful of light spots through trees as this can't be edited out on your skin for images. Always console your photographer as they will know the best spots if unsure.
Outdoor ceremony mini-checklist (especially beach)
- Real wet-weather backup plan (where, when you decide, who moves what)
- Wind + noise (do you need a mic/speaker?)
- Tides (check the tide at your ceremony hour, not just the date)
- Guest comfort (shade, water, bugs, heat)
Copy/paste questions to ask before you book
- What time slots are available and how long do we get (including set-up/pack-down)?
- What’s included in the price and what costs extra?
- What are the rules on music/speakers, styling, candles/confetti, photography?
- What’s the wet-weather backup plan?
- Who is the on-site contact/coordinator on the day?
- If this is a beach/park: do we need a permit and do we get exclusive use?
The “yes” test Book it when you can say yes to:
- It feels like us
- Guests will be comfortable
- Timeline works
- Backup plan is real
- Rules and costs are clear in writing
