Getting married in Byron Bay

Updated by the Wedlii planning team

Byron Bay is one of Australia's most-loved wedding destinations. Couples come for the beaches, the green hinterland, the relaxed coastal style and some of the country's most talented wedding suppliers.

It suits almost any style, from a barefoot beach ceremony to a long-table dinner in the hills. Many couples make it a whole weekend, with welcome drinks on the Friday and a recovery swim on the Sunday.

The flip side of its popularity: the best venues and suppliers book out early, and guest accommodation fills fast in peak season. Plan ahead and Byron is easy.

What is the best time of year to get married in Byron Bay?

September to November is the best time to get married in Byron Bay. Spring brings mild days of 22–25°C and the fewest rainy days of the year. September is the driest month, averaging just 5 rain days.

Summer (December to March) is hot, humid and the wettest stretch, with February and March averaging over 190 mm of rain. It's also peak holiday season, so accommodation books out fast. Autumn (April to May) is warm and quieter. Winter (June to August) brings sunny 19–20°C days and cool evenings, ideal for an intimate wedding with a fire pit.

Where can you get married in Byron Bay?

Byron Bay has four main wedding settings, and many couples mix two: a beach ceremony, then a reception in the hinterland.

  • Beaches and headlands. Wategos, Little Wategos, The Pass, Tallows and the Cape Byron Lighthouse area give you ocean views and golden-hour light. These spots are public and need a booking (see permits below).
  • The hinterland. The green hills around Bangalow, Newrybar, Federal and Mullumbimby are home to private estates, farms and macadamia plantations. Great for long-table dinners and marquees.
  • Rainforest and gardens. Lush, shady settings that stay cooler in summer and feel wonderfully private.
  • Restaurants and boutique hotels. Ideal for smaller weddings, with food, drinks and service in one place.

Private venues are the only option for a full reception with catering, drinks and dancing, since public beaches and reserves don't allow them.

Do you need a permit to get married on the beach in Byron Bay?

Yes. Every wedding ceremony on a Byron Bay beach or park needs approval, and who you ask depends on the spot.

  • Council land: ceremonies are up to 2 hours with a maximum of 150 guests. Reserves are alcohol free, and balloons and confetti aren't allowed. A fee applies, based on guest numbers.
  • National Parks spots, like Wategos: a small champagne toast can be approved, up to 24 chairs and a small arch are allowed, and music must be acoustic or a single small speaker. Confetti, petals, marquees and candles are not allowed.
  • It's never exclusive. Beaches stay open to the public, so expect swimmers and walkers in the background.
  • Parking is limited, especially at Wategos and the lighthouse. A shuttle for guests makes the day much easier.

Rules and fees can change, so always check the latest with the land manager before you lock in your date.

How far ahead should you book a Byron Bay wedding?

Book your venue and date 12 to 18 months ahead for a spring or summer Byron Bay wedding. Popular Saturdays in September to November go first.

  1. 12–18 months out: venue and date, then your photographer and celebrant, who book out early in Byron.
  2. 9–12 months out: guest accommodation. Hold a block of rooms or a few holiday houses, as Byron fills fast in peak season.
  3. 6–9 months out: florist, hair and makeup, music, and guest transport.
  4. 3–6 months out: your beach or park booking. Council needs at least 4 weeks, but popular spots go much sooner.
  5. 1–3 months out: final numbers, timeline and wet weather plan.

Byron Bay wedding FAQs

Can you drink alcohol at a beach wedding in Byron Bay?

Not on council beaches and reserves, which are alcohol free. At some National Parks spots, like Wategos, a small champagne toast can be approved as part of your booking.

Is confetti allowed at a Byron Bay beach wedding?

No. Confetti, petals, rice and balloons aren't allowed on council or National Parks land. Try bubbles, ribbon wands or a big group cheer instead.

Can you have a private beach ceremony in Byron Bay?

Not completely. Beach bookings never give exclusive use, so the public can still be there. For privacy, choose a quieter spot, an early morning time or a private venue.

What should Byron Bay wedding guests know?

Book accommodation early, plan transport (parking is tight and rideshares are limited at night), and pack layers. Evenings can be cool, even in spring.

Where do Byron Bay wedding guests stay?

Most stay in Byron Bay town, Suffolk Park, Bangalow or Lennox Head. Holiday houses work well for groups of friends and family.
